Horror at Westminster Abbey nuclear weapons "thanksgiving service"
Anti-nuclear campaigners have condemned plans to host a so-called "thanksgiving service" for Britain’s nuclear weapons system at Westminster Abbey.
The Royal Navy hosted a National Service of Thanksgiving to mark 50 years of the Continuous at Sea Deterrent (CASD) on 3 May 2019. New CASD Dreadnought submarines are currently being constructed as part of a £205 billion Trident replacement scheme.
Westminster Abbey is a ‘Royal Peculiar’ which means it is a Church of England building of worship, but it is outside of the authority of the traditional Anglican structures.
Anti-nuclear activists gathered outside London’s Westminster Abbey on Friday, to protest against the celebration of the 50th anniversary of submarine nuclear weaponry - the Continuous at Sea Deterrent (CASD).
Among the British officials to honour the submarines, Prince William was reportedly booed as he entered the abbey to attend the ceremony.
Footage shows protesters lying on the floor as to stage a 'die-in' and holding signs and posters condemning the nuclear celebration. “Many of the faith groups here in London have been protesting this incredibly stupid celebration of nuclear arms, here in Westminster Abbey, with many people, including Royals, coming to celebrate nuclear arms. It’s retarded,” said one protester.
