Belarusians of the Netherlands are running a series of events to call for solidarity with people in Belarus, who protest against authoritarianism regime and for fair elections. On Tuesday 23rd of June in Amsterdam, Belarus community gathered on Dam Square and walked through the city to show their solidarity with the people struggling for democratic rights in Belarus.

The video consists of 3 parts:

1. Start of the protest in Dam Square, Amsterdam. Around 80 Belarusian people arrived from all over the Netherlands
2. People walk through Amsterdam from Dam Square to Dutch National Opera
3. Belarusian sing “Try charapakhi”(three turtles) song, a symbol of resistance and protest to current Lukashenko’s authoritarian regime

Background information:

Presidential elections on 9th of August 2020 have already caused repressions and brutalities in the country. Alexander Lukashenko is the current president of The Republic of Belarus who has been in power for 26 years. None of the elections till today were recognized by the international community as free and fair.

Belarusian courts convicted many civilian people as part of a new wave of political persecution for expressing opinions, sentencing them to various terms of detention. The most popular presidential nominee Viktar Babaryka, who managed to collect 425.000 signatures in one month, was arrested on June 18. People in Belarus who make silent peaceful protests in many Belarusian cities are facing brutal arrests by the police. Filmed by Tasha Orlova
