Hundreds of Papuan students from Malang and Surabaya, East Java, Tuesday (18/8) held a demonstration to commemorate the racism incident that befell them a year ago.
The action was held at Apsari Park, across from the Grahadi State Building, Surabaya. As a result, the traffic on Jalan Governor Suryo had stalled.
Students unfurled posters that read 'Commemorating 1 year Monkey Day, Racist Events', and 'End racial discrimination against the people of Papua'

This demonstration to commemorate the incidence of racism began when an irresponsible person allegedly destroyed the red and white flag that was dumped into the ditch of the Papuan Student Dormitory at Kalasan Street, Surabaya, last year.

Some of the student demands to Government of Indonesia:
1. Urge the government to thoroughly investigate the gross human rights violations in Papua that have occurred in 1961 until now.
2. Urge the state to stop criminalizing Papuan human rights activists and lawyers, including Veronica Koman.
3. Demand the government to provide transparency of information and provide access to international journalists in Papua.
4. Stop all forms of military operations that are taking place in Papua, and urge the government to grant the right to self-determination for the Papuan people.
