Entangled Manta Ray Swims to Diver for Help
A group of us were hunting lionfish out of Pensacola. Lionfish are an invasive species that are decimating the fish populations in the Gulf of Mexico. The Manta Ray must have heard/sensed us and tracked us down. It swam, almost in slow motion, passed 3 other divers and right for Divemaster Carl Molitor who was by far the most experienced diver in the water. As it approached Carl saw thick monofilament wrapped around the rays mouth. The Ray hovered over him while he cut the line free. The second the line was pulled off, the ray dashed away.
