Humpbacks circle krill to create rarely-seen bubble-feeding ring
A drone has captured a pod of five humpback whales creating a rarely-seen feeding circle in order to catch krill in the water.
The clip filmed February 12 in Wilhelmina Bay, Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica shows the whales using a feeding technique called bubble-net feeding.
The group circles the krill to push them into a net of bubbles stopping them from escaping and pushing them to the surface. After the krill are trapped the whales simultaneously swim up to catch the krill.
"An amazing sight to see especially the aerial view from the drone," the filmer wrote online. "I was working as a chief officer on a research expedition vessel conducting research on the migration of humpback whales. It took the whole season to get this footage at the right moment."
