Critics claim the new law will favour investors at the expense of labour rights and the environment. The government, however, claims it will boost the economic recovery needed due to coronavirus.

Students have gathered across Indonesia to protest a new labor law the government claims will boost economic recovery needed due to coronavirus supporting claims that the bill will reduce labor conditions and environmental protections. The students also object to calls for students not to participate in protests and alleged incidents of police brutality.

The new legislation, which amends 79 existing laws and regulations, is expected to bring radical changes to Indonesia's labor system and natural resources management. President Joko Widodo's administration says it is needed to ease bureaucracy, attract more investment and create jobs at a time when Southeast Asia's largest economy is reeling from the coronavirus pandemic.
