Now that's a bright idea! Dad designs interactive LED hockey toy for son
A dad in Switzerland designed a high-tech interactive hockey puck for his two-year-old son after he saw other children playing street hockey outside.
Electrical engineer Yuksel Temiz didn't want his son being left out of the fun due to his young age so he took matters into his own hands.
Footage - some of it stop-motion video - shows the process of making the toy, including 3D printing for the puck casing and Arduino programming for the lights inside.
Temiz explained: "My two-year-old son saw kids playing street hockey and wanted to have a hockey stick. I couldn't find anything for his age in my country during the quarantine, so designed and made one using my 3D printer."
"I am an electrical engineer, I thought it would be fun to make the puck interactive. So, I designed a simple electronic board that would give light and sound effects depending on the acceleration of the puck," he added.
"The board comprises an Arduino microcontroller, an accelerometer, a battery, a piezo to generate simple sounds and a circular multi-colour LED module. I made two versions, one using standard coin cells and another using a rechargeable battery."
The video, which took days to make, was also an opportunity for Temiz to perfect his other hobbies, stop-motion animation and video editing.
The best bit? "My son loved it."
