Coastal towns near Istanbul plagued by masses of 'sea snot'

Coastal towns along the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul have been battling with large amounts of sea snot washing up on their shores.

Footage from June 15 shows the gluey substance washing up onto Suadiye beach.

Sea snot, also called mucilage, is a substance produced by plants and microorganisms. It also produced by phytoplankton when they are stressed.

Officials have removed 2,684 cubic metres (94,784 cubic feet) of sea snot from the Sea of Marmara, according to reports.
