New footbridge craned-in over historic canal in Kent, UK

A heavy duty crane lifted a new foot bridge into place this afternoon (20 July) across the historic Sheerness / Queenborough Lines defensive canal in Kent dating from 1868, originally designed to protect Sheerness dockyard from land attack.

Queenborough Lines is a listed Scheduled Monument of national importance, so extra care had to be been taken with the installation, which has taken two days. The foundations have been designed not to disturb the ground, requiring no excavation.

The pedestrian / cycle bridge forms part of the Sustrans National Cycling Network and replaces an older wooden bridge that collapsed.
