Heavy rains continued to bring flooding and misery to south and western Japan on Saturday (14 August).

Footage showed streets in the Tsubuku-honmachi area of Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture, submerged in floodwaters that almost entirely covered cars. Emergency services personnel are seen floating down the street in a boat.

The heavy rains in Kyushu and Chugoku regions caused flooding across Nagasaki, Saga, and Fukuoka prefectures.

Hiroshima was also issued the highest level alert for heavy precipitation.

It is the latest in a series of extreme weather events experienced around the world in recent months, that scientists say have been made more likely by climate change.
