Women in Gaza Strip defy gender norms to take traditionally male jobs in carpentry

Women in the Gaza Strip are working in the traditionally male field of carpentry to make a living.

Footage filmed on Saturday 4 September shows women making wooden educational tools and toys for children, in their workshop.

Poor economic conditions in the Gaza Strip have prompted many women to seek employment or set up their own businesses, defying reactionary beliefs about where or whether women should work.

As well as the difficulty of the work, Israel's blockade of the territory means the business does not always have enough timber. Despite this, the workers hope that conditions in the sector improve so they can export products abroad.
