The World Conker Championships took place in Northamptonshire, England on Sunday (October 10), with more than 2,000 people in attendance after last year's event was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The very British event, which started in 1965, is organised by the Ashton Conker Club and this year saw over 220 hopefuls take part in the competition, many in special costumes.

The game itself involves swinging a conker threaded on the end of a piece of string at an opponent's conker. The aim is to smash it.

Conkers are provided for each game and they cannot be tampered with or reused in another match.

Each conker player takes three alternate strikes at their opponent's conker, with a game decided once one of the conkers is smashed.

If a game lasts for more than five minutes it is stopped and each player will be allowed a further nine strikes. If neither conker is smashed, the winner is the player who hit the horse chestnut the most times during this period.

Defending women's champion Jasmine Tetley retained her title while Ady Hurrell won the men's category.

Money raised from the event goes to charities for the blind or partially sighted.
