A female graduate in Gaza opened a food and cake business amid sky-high unemployment in the territory.

Footage shot on 12 December showed Doaa Al-Naouq and a colleague making beautiful cakes for their customers.

The unemployment rate amongst youth in the Gaza Strip is about 67%, versus about 24% in the West Bank. The rate is even higher amongst graduates.

Gaza is under a strict blockade by Israel, which has cut the territory off from the world and has had dire effects on the local economy.

The unemployment rate among youth reached about 39%; 24% in the West Bank and 67% in Gaza Strip. Moreover, the youth graduates of those who hold a scientific qualification of an intermediate diploma or higher are the most group suffering from unemployment, as this rate reached about 54%; (36% in the West Bank and 79% in Gaza Strip).

Gaza’s 2-million population remains under “remote control” occupation and a strict siege, which has destroyed the local economy, strangled Palestinian livelihoods, plunged them into unprecedented rates of unemployment and poverty, and cut off from the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories and the wider world.
