There was tension on the streets of Paris' iconic Champs-Elysee avenue on Sunday 19 December, after Algeria won the FIFA Arab Cup.

The footballing final in fact happened thousands of miles away in Qatar, which held the Arab Cup as a test-tournament ahead of its hosting of the World Cup in 2022. However, France has a substantial Algerian minority, some of whom gather on the Champs-Elysee when the country has big sporting wins

It happened despite Covid rules banning such gathering in Paris.

Police broke up gatherings on "the most beautiful avenue in the world" several times during the evening, and issued tickets for traffic violations by fans in cars.

In total, 378 police tickets were issued, including 45 traffic violations and 39 arrests, before calm returned to the avenue at around 2:30 am local time on Monday morning.
