Whiteout conditions as 'lake effect' snow hits central New York
Heavy snow fell in Oswego and Lewis counties in New York on 10 January, causing whiteout conditions.
So-called 'lake effect' weather bands lingered over the area east of Lake Ontario on Monday night.
Lake effect snow is produced when a cold air mass moves across expanses of warmer lake water.
The air that is thus warmed, picks up moisture from the lake and rises through the colder air above, at which point it precipitates as snow, downwind of the lake.
