Baby Bonobo announcement for Twycross Zoo - just one day old

Buy video

Great news from Twycross Zoo in England. The only place in the UK that has Bonobos. A cute baby Bonobo ape named Upendi (Believed to mean 'Love' in Swahili) was born. Mum Cheka is still very protective of course, so there is just the odd glimpse here and there, but you can see the cutie's face and at the end the little dimple on his cheek when nursing.
What do you think, will it be a baby boy or a girl?
The baby was born on the 16th January 2022 and I filmed the baby a day later. To make sure the baby is OK first, they decided to delay the announcement. It is quite dark in their enclosure. I hope you can still see enough of the baby. I will keep everyone updated and more info when I've got it.
As Bonobos seem to live by the principle “make love, not war” it just comes at the right time for Valentine and it's World Bonobo Day on the 14th as well. Mother and baby have been closely monitored by the Twycross Zoo ape and veterinary team.
In September 2021 the bonobos got a new habitat with more room and much better lighting and better heating. Also now each group has its own outdoor area. No more need to share.
