Police seized a tonne of meth allegedly smuggled from Iran to Indonesia.

Officers found 66 sacks of crystal methamphetamine being guarded by five people - a female local, three Indonesian men, and one Afghan man - in Mandasari Beach, Pangandaran Regency, West Java province, on March 16.

The beach was reportedly used as a terminal for drug trafficking where the meth was received from Iran before it would be sent to other areas where the group operated.

An estimated total street value of IDR 1 trillion or almost 70 million USD was computed after the drugs were weighed. Officers are now looking to identify the group's cohort as it was believed to be part of a larger international network of drug traffickers.

Johannes R Manalu, the West Java Police Director of Drug Investigations, said: 'Officers arrested five suspects, one of whom was a man from Afghanistan. There was also a female local from Pangandaran and another Indonesian who was a known cyclist here in the province.'

The officer added that the smuggling operation was cracked after gathering information about an international network of methamphetamine smugglers from Iran.

A ship from Iran carried the drugs and was docked off the coast of the beach before its content was unloaded by ordinary-looking fishing boats.

The fishing boats would then take the drugs to Mandasari beach before smaller batches would be transported to different areas on small boats.

Police are now questioning those arrested for more information about the drug trade network while the drugs were transferred to the provincial police headquarters during the investigation.

Crystal methamphetamine is a highly-addictive drug that is usually used as a recreational drug and affects the central nervous system.
