The unusual multi-coloured 50 million year old cliffs of Alum Bay

Buy video

Alum Bay in the Isle of Wight is famous for its prehistoric multi-coloured cliffs which is said to contain over 20 different shades of sand and is the only place in the British Isles where it is possible to view such a variety of colours. The sands ranging from yellows, oranges, greens, white black and brown shades were formed through contamination of the minerals in the cliff faces.

The bay has been popular since Victorian times when collectors gathered sand to create artworks, though now visitors still flock to admire the stunning scenery as seen here in footage filmed overlooking the cliffs and on the beach (May 27).
