Shock report by National Trust regarding British Seaside Fun
British seaside is losing popularity say National Trust.
The proportion of adults who have made at least one day trip to the coast in the past year has dropped 20 percent in a decade. In 2005 62 per cent had a day trip to the coast but this year the figure had dropped to 42 per cent. It means nearly six in 10 have not been to the coast in the last 12 months. Yet virtually everyone says they feel happier by the sea and 88 per cent of adults in England, Wales and Northern Ireland regard the coast as a national treasure. The decade-long survey involving 9,000 people by the National Trust found that one in three are too busy to go to the coast.
One in four think the seaside is too busy in good weather while nearly one in five think it is too expensive or don't have easy access to transport and 14 per cent say they simply prefer to go abroad on holiday. Younger adults aged 18-24 are much less attached to the coast with only 14 per cent saying their happiest childhood memory is by the sea compared to 38 per cent of the over-55s.The survey was released 50 years after the Trust launched its Neptune campaign to safeguard the British coast. The Trust now manages 775 miles of coast in England, Wales and Northern Ireland or more than 10 per cent of the UK’s coastline.
