A massive humpback whale left a kayaker "terrified" after breaching yards from her ‘because it didn’t like boats near it.

Wilderness guide Brooke Bartleson was leading a tour off the coast of Juneau, Alaska, US, at the start of August when a pod of six whales surrounded them.

Astonishing footage showed one of the mammoth mammals flicking its giant tail out of the surface and slapping it powerfully onto the water yards from one of Brooke’s guests.

Brooke, 29, later identified the humpback as a whale that had been hit by a boat previously and as such doesn’t like vessels being near her.

Brooke said: “I was pretty terrified. The majority of the whale’s slaps were directed toward my client's kayak so I was preparing to do a capsize rescue.

“The whale was only a few yards from us. Fortunately, we were able to paddle away to give her space.

“We were kayaking when we accidentally found ourselves right out in front of a group of whales who were moving south in search of food.

“We watched them as they approached and then started getting out of their way, so we began paddling back to shore.

“One of the whales quickly caught up to us and began tail slapping close to our kayaks.

“Later we identified the whale based on her tail markings and we believe she was hit by a boat a while back, so she doesn’t respond well to seeing boats nearby.”

“The whale was only a few yards from us. Fortunately, she only a couple times before we were able to paddle away to give her space.
