Ukrainians mark Holodomor rememberance day in London
Protesters in London on Saturday marked Holodomor remembrance day, to commemorate the man-made famine which in the 1930s killed millions of people in Ukraine when it was part of the Soviet Union.
The video filmed on November 26 shows a woman speaking through a megaphone, explaining what the famine of 1932-33 was and how it affected Ukraine. She explains that both then and today, Russia was aiming to destroy Ukraine.
The Holodomor, which means death by hunger in Ukrainian, was caused by the policies of the Communist Party and Soviet government authorities headed by Josef Stalin.
Estimates conclude that 5.7 to 8.7 million people died of famine across the Soviet Union during the famine, including around 4 million people in Ukraine. In 2006, Ukraine recognized the famine as genocide while Russia denies that the famine was intentionally aimed at Ukrainians.
Ukraine pays its respects to victims of the tragedy by officially marking a Holodomor Memorial Day on the fourth Saturday of November each year.
