Video shot on Friday 6 January shows a large number of passengers arriving at East Railway Station in Yichang in Hubei province.

According to the Ministry of Transport, the travel rush will last 40 days from January 7 to February 15.

According to preliminary analysis, about 2.095 billion trips will be made during the Spring Festival travel rush, up 99.5% from the same period last year, recovering to 70.3% of the 2.98 billion trips made during the same period in 2019.

The increase has been put down to the sudden end of most Covid restrictions in China, though that has also let to a huge wave of infection that the country is struggling to handle.
