This base jumper was left stranded on a mountainside for about 17 hours, after crashing during a jump in South Africa.

40-year-old Rory Allen was on holiday with his wife when he decided to stay a bit longer to do some more base jumping.

Himself and a local decided to go for a jump off a mountainside they had done earlier in the holiday and had to share a helicopter to get to the top of the mountain, before a five hour hike.

After the helicopter dropped them off, they pointed them in the right direction but Rory and the others ended up getting lost for four hours.

Arriving at a different section of the mountain to where they were before, Rory looked around for exit points before settling on one but as he jumped off the cliff, he noticed a few issues and that it wasn't going well, so he opened his parachute.

Unfortunately the parachute opened sideways and sent him smashing straight into the wall, causing him to try and stop.

Rory was stuck on the mountain side for over 17 hours whilst waiting for rescue and once he was finally rescued, they found that Rory had broken his femur and ankle.

It has since taken over a year for him to be able to walk on his own without a limp and has since started base jumping again.

Rory said: “This was the worst day of my life and possibly the luckiest, I was seriously injured after this one and it took me over a year to recover.

“One of the locals organised a helicopter ride to the top of a mountain we’d already jumped earlier in the week and we were the last load of the day, everyone else had already jumped.

“The helicopter pointed us in the right direction but we got lost for four hours.

“I was looking for exit points and found one and went for it which was a terrible mistake.

“I broke my femur and ankle and had to have surgery. It’s taken a year of physiotherapy and personal training to walk without a limp.”
