In 1966 ornithologists from the University of Texas decided to explore the town of Aquismon in San Luis Potosí, due to its number of birds, but accidentally discovered a bird hole/cenote from which swifts (mistaken for swallows) fly out to eat breakfast, after sleeping peacefully in that place. It was declared on March 15, 2001 as «Natural Monument “El Sótano de las Golondrinas”» an now it is a natural area protected by the Mexican government.
