Abandoned Belfast - Revisiting North Street Arcade
Revisiting North Street Arcade, Belfast.
Originally built in 1936. An Art Deco shopping arcade in the Cathedral Quarter of Belfast.
It is the only example of a shopping arcade from this decade in Northern Ireland, and is one of only a handful left in the whole of the UK.
It was a chic space with individual units over three floors, a tiled walkway and glass roof, the arcade was built along a distinctive curving alignment with a central circular space off which ran two arms.
On 17th April 2004 an arson attack destroyed 23 businesses along with the floor and glass roof, but the basic structure of the units remains intact.
developer Castlebrooke Investments intends to Redevelop the North Street Arcade and bring it back into use in a new format with space for independent retailers.
