Oxford Street's famous Christmas lights are switched on in London

London's famous Oxford Street Christmas lights were switched on for the first time on 2 November.

The street is at the heart of London's shopping district.

The switch-on went ahead despite Storm Ciaran hitting the UK with heavy rains and high winds.

The Met Office has issued amber ‘danger to life’ warnings along the southern coast, but London has largely been spared the worst of the storm.

Nearby Carnaby Street will delay the switching on of its lights though, from 2 to 8 November.
