Severe Flooding Hits Moquegua, Peru
This footage was filmed and produced 20 January 2024.
In a recent update, the National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI) reported significant flooding in Moquegua, specifically due to the overflowing of the Moquegua and Tumilaca rivers in the Mariscal Nieto district. The incident, which occurred on January 20, prompted local authorities to initiate response measures.
The Regional Emergency Operations Center of Moquegua held a technical meeting with members of the Regional Civil Defense Platform to determine necessary actions in addressing the emergency. The Ministry of Interior's Sectorial Emergency Operations Center (COES) conveyed that the Peruvian National Police deployed personnel to the affected area to ensure security and support response efforts within their competencies.
The Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation's COES reported that the Sanitation Service Provider of Moquegua restricted water collection in Yunguyo and Tumilaca due to the river's ingress, impacting the water supply to the Los Angeles and Chen Chen sectors.
Preliminary information indicates damage to the road near the riverside promenade and disruption of water services in the area. The municipal Office of Disaster Risk Management continues the Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (EDAN).
Notably, on the night of January 20, the Tumilaca River reached a flow rate of 42.51 m³/s, reaching the orange hydrological threshold, as reported by Senamhi. This incident aligns with Meteorological Advisory No. 015, forecasting moderate to heavy precipitation in the mountainous region.
