Firefighters Brave Heights to Save Tower-Topping Star on Tolmezzo Cathedral, Italy
This footage was filmed and produced 7 February 2024.
The firefighters of Tolmezzo, located in Italy's Udine province, have successfully removed a dangerous metal artifact from the top of the town's cathedral campanile. The structure, a replica of a comet star, had been in place for 15 years and had traditionally been illuminated during the Christmas period. However, due to age and prolonged exposure to the weather, the structure had become damaged and unstable, posing a risk to pedestrians and vehicles on the road below.
Following a request from the local government, the firefighters utilized a recently acquired aerial platform that could reach up to 43 meters in height to access the artifact. Using Speleo Alpino Fluviale (Speleo Alpine River) techniques, the firefighters removed the star and secured it to the platform before bringing it back down to the ground.
The artifact will now undergo extensive restoration works before being returned to its rightful place at the top of the cathedral campanile. The removal operation has been hailed a success, and the local government has thanked the firefighters for their hard work and dedication in ensuring the safety of the public.
