India will hold general elections between April 19 and June 1 next in seven phases, with counting to begin on June 4, the country's Election Commission (ECI) announced on Saturday.

The first phase of the massive voting process in the country of 1.4 billion people will begin on 19 April, followed by six more: 26 April, 7 May, 13 May, 20 May, 25 May and 1 June.

Election Commission of India chief Rajiv Kumar told a press conference in New Delhi that the counting of the elections will begin on 4 June.
"This is a gigantic exercise in democracy, the largest electoral movement of people and materials in the world. More than 5.5 million electronic voting machines will be mobilised," Kumar said.
India's electoral roll is about 970 million voters, he said, while the number of polling stations will be about 1.1 million.
This is a new global record for the Asian country, surpassing the already historic number of 916 million voters called to the polls in the 2019 general elections.
