USA: China voices opposition to unilateral coercive measures at UN General Assembly
New York, USA - June 13, 2024
Storyline:
China opposes the adoption of unilateral coercive measures by a few countries, including the United States, against others, as such actions violate international law and represent hegemonic and power-driven politics, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Geng Shuang said on Thursday.
Speaking at a UN General Assembly meeting on the elimination of unilateral extraterritorial coercive measures as a means of political and economic compulsion, Geng said that China opposes the implementation of unilateral coercive measures, which contravene the U.N. Charter and other international laws, impede the realization of sustainable development goals, violate the human rights in other countries, and aggravate humanitarian crises in relevant countries.
The arbitrary imposition of unilateral sanctions by a few countries including the United States against other countries without authorization by the Security Council, in accordance with their own preferences and needs, is essentially placing their own laws above international law and the laws of other countries, and constitutes a violation of the principle of sovereign equality, interference in the internal affairs of other countries and contempt for the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, Geng said.
Moreover, these unilateral and frequent sanctions severely disrupt normal economic and trade exchanges for affected nations, threatening stability of global supply chains and endangering food, energy, and financial security, significantly impacting the global economic order, he added.
Geng emphasized China's call for an immediate end to unilateral sanctions. Additionally, he urged the international community to join forces against such illegal actions by some countries and to aid sanctioned nations in easing their difficulties.

3. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to United Nations:
"A few countries, including the U.S., abuse their power by using unilateral sanctions as weapons and tools. This approach reflects their underlying logic of the 'law of the jungle', where stronger nations exploit weaker ones. Their main goal is to maintain dominance and hegemony, as well as an unjust and irrational global order. This behavior is evident in their actions of bullying smaller and less powerful countries, using their economic strength to oppress the less affluent.";
