Canada: Toronto Zoo Celebrates Birth of Rare Red Panda Cubs
Toronto, Canada - June 13, 2024
The Toronto Zoo is abuzz with excitement as it announces the birth of two red panda cubs, born to mother Sakura on Thursday, June 13. This joyous occasion marks a significant milestone for conservation efforts of this endangered species.
Sakura, the 11-year-old red panda, surprised zookeepers after an unexpected successful breeding season, following an initial belief in her declining fertility. Previously retired from the AZA Red Panda Species Survival Plan®, Sakura's journey to motherhood began with her reunion with former mate Arun earlier this year.
"Red pandas are an endangered species facing threats from illegal hunting and habitat loss," remarked Dolf DeJong, CEO of the Toronto Zoo. "The birth of these cubs not only brings joy but underscores our commitment to the conservation and education of these remarkable animals."
The road to confirming Sakura's pregnancy was fraught with challenges typical of red panda reproduction. With the help of advanced reproductive science techniques and Sakura's training in voluntary ultrasound sessions, zoo staff confirmed the pregnancy in early June. Initial ultrasound observations revealed bone development and fetal heartbeats, culminating in the birth of two healthy cubs on June 13.
Despite the initial celebration, red panda cubs face precarious survival odds, both in captivity and the wild. Studies show significant early pregnancy losses and low survival rates, underscoring the importance of meticulous care during this vulnerable period.
"While Sakura and her cubs will remain out of public view for now, our Wildlife Care team will provide them with the best possible care," added DeJong. "We invite our community to join us in celebrating this new addition to our Toronto Zoo family and in supporting our ongoing conservation efforts."
