UK: Activists Decorate Stonehenge in Climate Protest Ahead of Summer Solstice
Salisbury, UK - June 19, 2024
In a bold statement ahead of the Summer Solstice celebrations, two activists from Just Stop Oil adorned Stonehenge with vibrant orange powder paint today, calling for urgent climate action from the UK government and beyond.
The symbolic action, which began around noon, aimed to draw attention to the pressing need to end fossil fuel extraction and combustion by 2030. Just Stop Oil supporters emphasized the necessity for a global commitment to phase out oil, gas, and coal, citing the existential threat posed by continued fossil fuel use.
This protest follows the Labour party's recent manifesto commitment to halt new oil and gas licenses if elected, aligning with Just Stop Oil's demand. However, activists argue that more comprehensive measures are imperative to safeguard humanity's future.
A spokesperson for Just Stop Oil articulated their stance: "We applaud the Labour party's pledge to stop new oil and gas ventures, but halting future licenses alone won't suffice. The consequences of fossil fuel consumption are dire, threatening millions of lives. We urge the UK government to lead by example, endorsing a binding international treaty to phase out fossil fuels by 2030."
Niamh Lynch, 21, a student participating in the protest, underscored the urgency: "Stonehenge, a symbol of ancient wisdom and connection to nature, embodies our collective responsibility to protect the environment. Our actions today symbolize the need for immediate and transformative climate policy."
Rajan Naidu, 73, another participant, drew parallels with past global treaties: "Just as the world came together to address nuclear threats through international agreements, we now need a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. This treaty must support affected economies, workers, and communities in transitioning away from fossil fuels."
The use of orange cornflour for the protest aimed to create a visually striking display that would soon fade away, contrasting with the enduring call for robust governmental action to mitigate climate change.
As activists prepare for tomorrow's Summer Solstice gathering at Stonehenge, they anticipate widespread support for their cause, echoing sentiments across Europe and beyond for concerted climate action.
The demonstration at Stonehenge underscores growing public pressure on governments worldwide to prioritize environmental sustainability and commit to a fossil-free future.
