Luis Maria Campos Street was filled with Caribbean accents, tricolour flags of yellow, blue and red, and chants laden with hope on a historic day for these expatriates, who, after years of distance and hardship, see this Sunday's election day as an opportunity to influence the future of their country from abroad.
By midday, 700 people had already voted, according to Daniel Ramirez, in charge of electoral liaison for the Venezuelan command in Argentina. "The day is going smoothly. The witnesses all arrived at 5am. At 6.30 the doors opened and since then everything has flowed quickly and in an orderly fashion," he said. On the role of the embassy, he commented that it had done its job properly. "It did what it had to do," he said.
