Lebanon: At least 22 killed in latest Israeli attack on Beirut: health authority
Beirut, Lebanon - October 03, 2024
Storyline:
At least 22 people were killed and 117 others were injured in two fresh rounds of Israeli air strikes on the urban area of Beirut on Thursday, said a latest statement issued by the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health.
Lebanon has been attacked 9,531 times by the Israeli army since the outbreak of the latest round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict in October 2023, resulting in 2,169 deaths and 10,212 injuries in Lebanon alone, according to statistics released by the Lebanese government earlier in the day.
According to Israeli media reports, the Israeli attacks on Beirut targeted Wafiq Safa, a senior member of Hezbollah. The United States imposed sanctions on Wafiq Safa in 2019, saying that he was responsible for Hezbollah's cooperation with the international community and Lebanese security agencies.
Since Sept. 23, the Israeli military has been carrying out an extensive air campaign in Lebanon, dubbed "Arrows of the North," in a dangerous escalation with Hezbollah.
Since October last year, Hezbollah and Israeli forces have been exchanging fire along the Lebanese-Israeli border, stoking fears of a wider conflict as the war between Hamas and Israel continues in Gaza.
The Lebanese government has so far set up 1,023 refugee centers to accommodate displaced people, of which 822 have reached their full capacity. Currently, 186,400 displaced people are staying in the official refugee centers. From Sept. 23 to Oct. 10 this year, 314,481 Syrian citizens and 111,801 Lebanese citizens entered Syria through the border crossings between the two countries.
