Spain: Spanish PM unveils second aid package for flood-stricken Valencia
Spain - Recent Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Monday a second aid package for those affected by the devastating flash floods that struck the Valencia region on October 29. At a press conference from his official residence at the Palacio de la Moncloa, Sanchez detailed the new package, which includes 110 measures totaling 3.765 billion euros. This follows the 10.6 billion euros in aid he announced last week to address the extensive damage caused by the floods, which, according to the government website, have claimed 222 lives and severely impacted infrastructure and businesses in Valencia, Castilla-La Mancha, and Andalusia. A central focus of the new aid package is to assist homeowners, including renters, by offering financial support to replace household items, with the government covering 50 percent of replacement costs upfront to reduce waiting times during claim processing. The package also includes provisions to protect the income of around 400,000 workers, support 30,000 companies in resuming their operations, and aid approximately 100,000 households in meeting essential needs. To streamline assistance, the government plans to expand infrastructure to expedite claims processing. In Valencia, the search is still ongoing for the rest more than 30 missing people. In the meantime, 47 schools that were not seriously damaged in the region reopened on Monday. On the same day, Minister for Transport and Sustainable Mobility Oscar Puente announced that high-speed train service between Valencia and Madrid, which has been suspended since October 29, will resume on Thursday. However, many railways in Valencia will remain suspended, possibly for months. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) on Monday warned of a new episode of intense storms in Spain due to a cold air mass from northern Europe. Valencia has issued a yellow warning for heavy rains in some areas of the region in the next two days. Strong and persistent rains will also occur in the Balearic Islands autonomous community, and snows will hit mountainous areas in northern Spain, along with a general drop in temperatures nationwide, according to the Aemet.
