US: Heroes in the Storm: TWRA Officers Save Lives Amid Floodwaters of Hurricane Helene
United States - September 27, 2024 EAST TENNESSEE—Dramatic bodycam footage from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has captured the heroic efforts of officers as they rescued people from the life-threatening floodwaters caused by Hurricane Helene. As rivers swelled and entire communities were submerged, four officers risked their lives to save those trapped by the floodwaters. The footage, shared at a TWRA meeting on December 6, highlights their swift response and the courage it took to navigate the treacherous conditions. Maj. Shelley Hammonds, Lt. Jeff Prater, Communications Coordinator Matt Cameron, and District 42 Officer Justin Pinkston were honored with Law Enforcement Valor Awards for their bravery. Their teamwork was crucial in saving multiple lives as floodwaters engulfed homes and roadways. During the rescue, Prater and Hammonds coordinated efforts as floodwaters threatened to overtake Unicoi County Hospital. They rushed to help people stranded on rooftops and in houses, using boats to navigate flooded neighborhoods. Officers waded through rising waters, saving individuals and pets, and even breaking into homes to rescue people pinned inside. “We were just focused on getting them out, making sure everyone was safe,” said Pinkston, who helped free a trapped person and reassured them, “You’ve still got your life. That’s what’s most important.” The officers' swift and selfless actions during Hurricane Helene have earned them recognition, but for the people they saved, they will forever be remembered as heroes who brought hope amid disaster.
