Rome, Italy - January 09, 2025 Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, assured this Thursday that the migrant detention centers built in Albania are ready to be reactivated, following the latest ruling from the Supreme Court regarding which countries are considered safe for repatriation. STATEMENTS BY THE ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER, GIORGIA MELONI: 1.- It seems to me that the Supreme Court's rulings support the government's position, since the Court establishes that it is up to the government to determine which countries are safe and, consequently, the judge cannot systematically disallow the internment of migrants coming from those countries. However, what the judge must do is to justify, in each specific case, why a person would not be safe in that country, which is something completely different from what the judges of the Rome court have done, who did not enter into the assessment of the individual case. 2.- From our point of view, the centers in Albania are ready to start operating. We have a device ready to be activated at any time. Fortunately, last year the number of disembarkations decreased by 60%, and in the last few weeks, especially in the last few days, they have practically decreased to zero. However, the centers are ready to be activated as soon as needed, and as I was mentioning, the device is ready to be put in place at any time.
