Nicaragua - January 23, 2025 A group of some 50 Nicaraguans released from prison by the government of Daniel Ortega in 2024 are stranded in Guatemala, following the decision of the United States to reject their request for asylum. Two of the affected activists explain that they are living days of “uncertainty” and will now seek support from other countries. (Camera: Mariano Macz.) Statements by sexual diversity activist Julio Dávila: Our brothers were given letters in which they argued that the testimonies were not credible. And many of them were told that they were denied entry to the United States for acts of terrorism, for acts of sabotage. For different things that the tyranny literally imposed on us. I want to make it known that the tyranny never recognized that we were political prisoners until later they came to change the accusatory figure.
