Lebanon: UN interim force warns of 'still very volatile and fragile' situation in southern Lebanon
Beirut, Lebanon - January 21, 2025 As the 60-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel nears its end, an UN official has highlighted the ongoing challenges in southern Lebanon, including daily violations of the truce arrangements by Israeli troops. Andrea Tenenti, spokesman for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), also highlighted the critical role of UNIFIL's international troops, including the Chinese contingent, in stabilizing the region. The ceasefire, brokered by the United States and France, came into effect on Nov 27, 2024, aiming to halt nearly 14 months of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. The agreement stipulates that Israel withdraw from Lebanese territory within 60 days, with the Lebanese army assuming security responsibilities along the Lebanese-Israeli border and in the southern region. The Lebanese army is tasked with preventing the presence of weapons or militants in the area. Despite the ceasefire, the Israeli army has continued to carry out strikes in Lebanon, some of which have resulted in deaths and injuries. Israel has also accused Hezbollah of violating the ceasefire. Speaking to China Central Television (CCTV) in Beirut on Tuesday, Tenenti emphasized that the situation in southern Lebanon remains fragile and that the continued implementation of UN Resolution 1701 must remain a priority. UN Resolution 1701, passed in 2006 after a 33-day war between Israel and Hezbollah, calls for the cessation of hostilities, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon, and the deployment of additional UNIFIL troops to monitor the ceasefire. Tenenti also praised the contributions of Chinese peacekeepers to the UNIFIL mission, particularly for their work in clearing land mines and unexploded ordnance inside the conflict zone. The violations are still daily. We can hear everyday drones, fighter jets. So, air violations, violation with the distractions of the south of Lebanon. Firing and demolition, presence of IDF in the south of Lebanon is also a violation of Resolution 1701."; [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] FILE: Beirut, Lebanon - October 2024 4. So far, the Lebanese army had been able to move to several locations. We have been doing this work in coordination with them, moving into this location together with UNIFIL, and then taking over all this position. That's the work of [Resolution] 1701 to support the Lebanese army. But so far, we are still far from a full withdrawal of IDF from the south of Lebanon. Many villages and many areas are still under occupation."; 8. UN flag; 9. SOUNDBITE (English) Andrea Tenenti, spokesman, UNIFIL (starting with shot 8/partially overlaid with shot 10): "The work of the Chinese contingent has been spectacular from the moment they have been stepping inside the mission area. Their work is mainly engineering work. De-mining, at the moment, [is] a very needed work because the areas in south Lebanon is full of unexploded ordinance and land mines and requires a lot of work in order to de-mine these areas. And the work of the Chinese contingents has been very meticulous and very appreciated by everyone because clearing this area, it's a dangerous job, it's an important work. And they've been doing this work for many years with great dedication and professionalism."; [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] 10.
