Tony Fisher from Suffolk UK had already broken official world records for making the world's largest and smallest Rubik's Cube. Now he has tackled a new challenge and made a 100 layer Rubik's Cube. Or in twisty puzzling terms a 100x100x100. This beats the previous 49 layer Rubik's Cube by Preston Aldon set in March 2024. Tony's puzzle is 56.2cm (22 inches) wide and weighs 87 kg (191 pounds). It has 58,808 external parts and 1,177 internal ones and took 4 years to design, 3D print, clean up the parts and assemble.
The outer sides are 8.5 cm wide and each has 10,000 pieces. The other 98 layers are 4mm wide and have 396 pieces. The difference in size is required for any puzzle over 5 layers. This is because otherwise the corner pieces would totally overhang the side of the puzzle during turns meaning there's no way to attach them to the core mechanism. The puzzle was 3D printed in black with coloured ABS plastic.
