Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone scam call centres employing thousands
In January, Laotian authorities reported finding 306 fraudulent call centres in Bokeo Province's Special Economic Zone. The centres were employing 15,970 (6120 Lao and 9850 foreign) workers.(Laotian Times} As part of ongoing efforts to rid the region of scam centres along Thailand's borders, 67 Indian nationals were rescued recently in Laos by the Indian Embassy. They had been tricked into working as scammers in the SEZ operated by Kings Romans International, a Hong Kong registered company whose owners are sanctioned by the USA.
Thailand has removed internet equipment, destroyed cables and jammed cell phone numbers in this part servicing Laos.
The SEZ is notorious for illegal activities including human trafficking,wildlife crimes, money laundering.and drug smuggling.
