While doing some personal forecasting on Tuesday I noticed there was a moderate risk of tornadoes in the central Illinois area the upcoming day. I decided I would try storm chasing for the first time and it sure went a lot crazier than I expected! I was observing an approaching tornado-warned supercell on Doppler radar so I positioned myself near Chenoa, IL on route 24 and observed it coming in from the southwest. Once the winds of the rear flank downdraft (RFD) blasted into me I decided to make a run northeast out of it towards Pontiac up Route 66. It was there I captured this gnarly ground vortex across a field to the west. I was driving parallel with the vortex for a few minutes in awe and then decided to hunker down at a gas station in Pontiac. There is debate whether this vortex was that of a tornado or a gustnado but nonetheless it was an exhilarating experience that I won’t forget.
