Myanmar (Burma): Over 260 Russian rescuers search for people under rubble in Myanmar’s Mandalay
Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma) - April 02, 2025 Over 260 Russian rescuers search for people under rubble in Myanmar’s Mandalay -MANDALAY, MYANMAR — RELEASED ON APRIL 2, 2025 — RESTRICTION: USERS MUST CREDIT “RUSSIAN MINISTRY OF EMERGENCY SITUATIONS (EMERCOM)” HANDOUT, MUST NOT OBSCURE LOGO — EDITORIAL USE ONLY — More than 260 Russian rescuers are working around the clock in Mandalay to clear debris and search for victims in the disaster-stricken area, officials from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) reported on Wednesday, April 2. In the past 24 hours, canine teams have scoured over 8,000 square meters, utilizing highly trained dogs that can detect victims buried under large amounts of rubble. Since the operation began, approximately 62,000 square meters have been surveyed, according to EMERCOM. Emergency medical teams at a mobile field hospital have provided treatment to more than 30 injured individuals. Russian specialists are clearing debris manually and using specialized rescue equipment to remove concrete slabs and reinforcement bars. Many people are reported to be trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings. Rescue teams and volunteers are continuing their efforts in the affected areas. Delivering aid to the disaster zone remains a challenge due to the damage to infrastructure caused by the earthquakes. The death toll from the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday has reached 2,719, the country’s junta chief said Tuesday. In addition, over 4,521 people have been injured, and more than 440 remain missing. In response to the disaster, Myanmar declared seven days of national mourning on Monday. As time passes and hundreds of people remain unaccounted for, the number of fatalities is expected to rise. Writing by Mustafa Tuncer
