Sicily, Italy - April 3, 2025 SICILY, ITALY (APR. 03, 2025) (ANADOLU – ACCESS ALL) (NIGHT SHOTS) SHOTLIST: 1. MOUNT ETNA SPEWING ASH AND LAVA (TWO SHOTS) SICILY, ITALY - APR. 03, 2025: Etna, an active volcano in southern Italy, unleashed ash and lava in a powerful eruption. Local sources told Anadolu that the activity began yesterday evening in the southeastern crater, one of Etna’s active zones at roughly 3,300 meters high, and persisted into this evening. Italian media, citing the Catania branch of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), reported that the volcano forcefully expelled ash and lava, with an ash cloud drifting eastward. Due to the eruption's strength, the INGV’s Catania team issued a red alert for air traffic in the region this morning, though Fontanarossa Airport in Catania remained open. The ash-spewing, which started yesterday evening, eased by the afternoon, prompting a gradual lowering of the airplane warning. This marks Etna’s latest significant activity since February, following intense eruptions and lava flows last summer in Sicily, home to Europe’s tallest active volcano.
