Bolsonaro is set to stand trial for allegedly leading a conspiracy to overthrow Lula da Silva, who won the presidential election on October 31, 2022, through military intervention. In the second round of the presidential election held on October 30, 2022, left-wing President Lula da Silva defeated far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro. After winning the election, Lula da Silva took office on January 1, 2023, being sworn in by parliament. After the election results were announced, Bolsonaro's supporters blocked highways across the country for days. On January 8, 2023, they breached police barricades and stormed the National Congress building, chanting for military intervention. Police were also unable to prevent protesters from forcibly entering the presidential palace and the Supreme Court building.
