A Japanese civic group - The Document Center for Japanese Germ-warfare Unit 731 - organized a study session on Saturday in Tokyo to introduce the war-time crimes by Unit 731 in China. Unit 731 was a top-secret biological and chemical warfare research base established in Harbin City of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province as the nerve center for Japanese biological warfare in China and Southeast Asia during World War II. At least 3,000 people were used for human experimentation by Unit 731, and Japan's biological weapons killed more than 300,000 people across China. The historical materials that the study session used are theses written by a former Japanese Army Unit 731 war criminal, Junichi Kaneko. He published his thesis in 1949, detailing experimental data of the Japanese army's germ-warfare activities across China from 1940 to 1942. The Document Center for Japanese Germ-warfare Unit 731 hopes to urge the Japanese government to confess Japan's aggression against China during World War II and reflect on it by introducing these historical facts to the public via study sessions. "When it comes to the human experimentation and germ warfare carried out by Unit 731 in China, the Japanese government stubbornly remains in denial. I hope new discoveries on evidence will impose public pressure on the government. I believe this will make a difference and I will keep working on it," said Nasu Shigeo, member of the Document Center for Japanese Germ-warfare Unit 731. People who attended the study session were shocked and angry at the crimes mentioned in Junichi Kaneko's thesis. "During the war of aggression unilaterally initiated by Japan, many Chinese people lost their lives, especially in inhumane warfare, such as gas warfare and germ warfare, which killed numerous innocent Chinese people. Not only that, Unit 731 also carried out a large number of human experiments, including the capture and abduction of local people regardless of gender or age," said a participant. Attendees also believe that the Japanese government should allow the younger generations to know the truth about the country's history so as to learn valuable lessons by facing up to it. "Why aren't these contents included into textbooks? I think children should know the crimes that Japan used to commit and learn from them to prevent from repeating them," said another participant.
