France: Memorial held in Paris for Muslim youth Aboubakar Cisse killed in mosque stabbing
PARIS, FRANCE - MAY 1, 2025: A memorial gathering was held in Paris on Thursday, May 1, for Aboubakar Cisse, a young Muslim man who was fatally stabbed while praying at a mosque in southern France. The event took place at Place de la République in the French capital and began at noon local time. Organized in memory of Cisse, the gathering drew a large crowd just days after his tragic killing during prayer. Cisse’s family was in attendance, alongside members of the public, lawmakers from the far-left France Unbowed (LFI) party — including Carlos Martens Bilongo, Thomas Portes, and Eric Coquerel — as well as Sabrina Sebaihi of the Green Party (EELV), and French comedian of Tunisian descent, Samia Orosemane. Participants held signs bearing messages such as “No to hatred against Muslims,” “Aboubakar Cisse, victim of hate,” and “Justice for Aboubakar Cisse.” Cisse, a 24-year-old Malian national, was stabbed to death last week at Hatice Mosque in La Grand-Combe, a town in the Gard region. The suspected attacker, identified as Olivier H., a French citizen of Bosnian origin born in 2004, surrendered to police in Italy late Sunday after several days on the run, according to Franceinfo. Authorities reported that Cisse was stabbed between 40 and 50 times while praying inside the mosque early Friday. Writing by Nur Zeynep Dukmen
