SICILY, ITALY - MAY 5, 2025: Experts launched recovery operations on Saturday, May 3, for a British-flagged superyacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Sicily last year, leaving 7 people dead. Mike Lynch, a British tech entrepreneur and billionaire who owned the vessel, along with his daughter Hannah was among the dead. Among the other deceased was also Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef, whose body was found just hours after the vessel sank. The incident took place around 5 a.m. local time (0300GMT) on Aug. 19, when the 56-meter-long (184 feet) boat sank due to heavy rains and stormy weather off the coast of Porticello, 20 kilometers (over 12.4 miles) east of Palermo, media outlets reported. In rescue efforts, 15 of the 22 people on board were initially saved; one body was found, and six were reported missing. The people on the yacht were from the UK, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, France, Ireland, US, and Canada. Reporting by Alberto Lo Bianco // Writing by Mustafa Tuncer
