South Korea: Hollywood Star Rescues 67 Dogs From South Korean Dog Meat Farm Ahead Of National Ban
Cheongju-si, South Korea - May 07, 2025 Humane World for Animals helped save 67 dogs from a dog meat farm that was shut down for cruelty violations. Actor Daniel Henney joined the rescue team. The farm’s owner had been breeding dogs for meat and serving it in his restaurant for 40 years. Authorities closed the farm earlier this year after the owner violated the Animal Protection Act. As South Korea prepares for a dog meat ban in 2027, the owner transitioned to chili farming. Humane World for Animals volunteers stepped in to relocate the dogs, including puppies and pregnant dogs. Henney, a long-time advocate for ending the dog meat trade, helped save the dogs and relocate them to the United States. Most of the dogs were Jindo mixes. In February 2025, Henney was seen in photos and videos helping the dogs out of their cages. He became visibly emotional while assisting the rescue. “They’re not even eating their food, they just want love,” Henney said in one video. Henney also toured the rest of the farm, pointing out the horrific conditions, including blood stains on a cutting board. He helped move the dogs to travel kennels for transport. Fifty of the 67 dogs were sent to Humane World for Animals’ rehabilitation center in Maryland for veterinary care. The other 17 dogs will join them when old enough to travel. Henney, who adopted Juliette, a dog rescued from a South Korean meat farm in 2020, expressed his pride in supporting the ban and ensuring no more dogs would suffer. “I’m looking forward to following the journey of these dogs as they find their forever homes,” Henney said. Sangkyung Lee, campaign manager for Humane World for Animals Korea, expressed relief that the law was finally dismantling the dog meat industry. “For them, the dog meat industry is over, and they have nothing but soft beds, full bellies, and lots of love ahead of them,” Lee said.
