VARIOUS OF GARBAGE OVERFLOWING FROM CONTAINERS / GARBAGE SCATTERED AROUND CONTAINERS PRISTINA, KOSOVO - MAY 22: Cleaning workers in Pristina staged a protest in front of the municipal building on Thursday, May 22, expressing frustration over unpaid debts by local authorities. The Regional Waste Company "Pastrimi" halted garbage collection in the capital on May 14, leaving bins overflowing and waste scattered across the streets. The company blamed the municipality for freezing its funds and attempting to privatize the public enterprise. According to "Pastrimi," the local government has blocked a debt payment of 2.7 million euros, leaving workers unpaid and without fuel for garbage trucks, forcing them to suspend operations. The Pristina Municipality stated it is ready to negotiate a new 1.5-million-euro contract, which would expand "Pastrimi’s" coverage area alongside two other operators. However, no agreement has been reached yet. Meanwhile, Kosovo’s Basic Prosecution in Pristina, describing the situation as "pollution, degradation, or environmental destruction," has authorized police to gather evidence regarding waste management failures. This marks the second week that residents of the capital have been left to deal with uncollected trash piling up outside their homes.
